A UPI QR code encodes a upi://pay link carrying your virtual payment address (pa), an optional payee name (pn), an optional amount (am), and the currency (cu=INR). When someone scans it with any UPI app — Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, or a bank's own app — the app opens a pre-filled payment screen. Every UPI app can read every UPI QR code because they all follow the same NPCI link format.
A static UPI QR code never expires and costs nothing to display. It does not contain your bank account number, balance, or any secret — only your public UPI ID, the same identifier you would share in a chat message. The payment itself is authorized on the customer's phone with their UPI PIN, so the QR code alone can never pull money out of your account.
One safety habit worth teaching your staff: you never need to enter a UPI PIN to receive money. If a 'customer' shows a QR code or link that asks for your PIN to accept a payment, it is a scam.
